Your partner in early parenthood.

Your Irish entitlements as a new parent: a starting guide

The three main State benefits you’ll encounter as a new parent in Ireland – 2026 rates, who qualifies, and how to apply. The rest of the landscape is inside BROODE.

Becoming a parent in Ireland triggers a whole set of State benefits, leave entitlements, and application processes. Most parents learn about these in fragments – usually from a friend, a forum, or the moment something goes wrong.

This guide covers the three main income-replacement benefits you’ll encounter in your first year: Maternity Benefit, Paternity Benefit, and Parent’s Benefit. It’s written to give you a starting orientation. There’s much more to know – New Baby Grant, free GP care for under-8s, paid antenatal visits, breastfeeding break rights, Working Family Payment, tax credits, and more – but the three below are the ones most parents interact with first.

For the full picture, all in one place, with every entitlement explained for Irish parents – that’s what lives inside your BROODE membership.

Maternity Benefit

Maternity Benefit is a weekly payment from the Department of Social Protection to mothers on maternity leave from employment or self-employment.

2026 rate: €299 per week for 26 weeks.

How long: 26 weeks of paid maternity leave (156 days). At least 2 weeks must be taken before your due date. You can add a further 16 weeks of unpaid leave immediately after.

Who qualifies: Employed and self-employed mothers with enough PRSI contributions on their record. The specific contribution requirements depend on whether you’re employed or self-employed – the thresholds are different for each.

When to apply: At least 6 weeks before your maternity leave is due to start (12 weeks if you’re self-employed).

How to apply: Online at mywelfare.ie using a verified MyGovID account, or by post.

Good to know: Maternity Benefit is taxable, but not subject to USC or PRSI. Payment is made weekly directly into your bank account – or to your employer, if they continue paying your full salary during leave.

Members get more: The full BROODE course on Irish entitlements covers exact PRSI qualification thresholds for every employment type, how your rate changes if you have dependents, what happens with premature births, stillbirth, and serious illness during maternity leave, plus all the forms you need and how to complete them.

Paternity Benefit

Paternity Benefit is a weekly payment for the other parent – fathers, same-sex partners, civil partners, and cohabitants – taking paternity leave in the first 6 months after birth or adoption.

2026 rate: €299 per week for 2 weeks.

How long: 2 weeks of paternity leave, taken consecutively, at any point in the first 26 weeks after your baby’s birth or adoption placement.

Who qualifies: Employed and self-employed partners with sufficient PRSI contributions – same thresholds as Maternity Benefit.

When to apply: At least 4 weeks before leave starts (12 weeks if self-employed). You must apply within 6 months of the birth, or you lose the benefit.

How to apply: Online at mywelfare.ie or by post.

Members get more:  Inside your BROODE membership, the Paternity Benefit content includes PRSI thresholds, same-sex couple scenarios, adoption scenarios, and everything your partner actually needs to know to claim it correctly.

Parent's Benefit

Parent’s Benefit is a weekly payment for each parent to take extra leave in the first two years of their child’s life – on top of maternity or paternity leave.

2026 rate: €299 per week.

How long: 9 weeks per parent (increased from 7 weeks in August 2024). Crucially, this entitlement is non-transferable– each parent has their own 9 weeks, and one parent cannot sign their weeks over to the other.

When it’s available: Within the first 2 years of your baby’s life (or the first 2 years after adoption).

How flexible: You can take the 9 weeks in one continuous block, or split across separate weeks with your employer’s agreement.

Who qualifies: Employees and self-employed parents with sufficient PRSI contributions. You need to notify your employer at least 6 weeks before your intended start.

How to apply: Online at mywelfare.ie.

Members get more: Inside your BROODE membership, Parent’s Benefit is covered in detail alongside the full picture – including how this fits with Maternity and Paternity Benefit, and the financial planning that goes with spreading leave across 2 years.

The big picture - and why it matters

Between Maternity Benefit, Paternity Benefit, and Parent’s Benefit, a two-parent family with sufficient PRSI contributions can access up to 46 weeks of paid State leave across their baby’s first 2 years.

But this is only part of the picture. The full landscape of what Irish parents are entitled to includes:

  • New Baby Grant – €280 per child (€560 for twins), paid automatically with your first Child Benefit payment
  • Child Benefit – €140 per month per child (higher rates for twins and triplets)
  • Free GP visits for children under 8
  • Free maternity and infant care services
  • Paid time off work for antenatal appointments and classes
  • Working Family Payment (for lower-income households)
  • National Childcare Scheme subsidies
  • Single Person Child Carer Credit, Home Carer Tax Credit, and other tax supports
  • One hour paid breastfeeding break per day at work (up to 2 years after birth)

Inside your BROODE membership, all of these are explained in detail – what they’re worth, who qualifies, and how to apply. No more Googling. No more forum-hopping. No more wondering if you’re missing something.
